Why HTMA Testing is the GOAT of Functional Labs
Now offering discounted HTMA packages! Individualized client reports, diet/supplement recommendations and targeted protocols waiting for you inside!
There’s a lab test I turn to time and time again that gives me deep insight into what’s happening inside the body—especially when symptoms are vague, persistent, or confusing for clients.
It’s called the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA), and it’s one of the most underutilized but powerful tools in functional nutrition.
If you’ve never heard of HTMA before, let me give you a peek into why I consider it a foundational piece of the puzzle when supporting women through any season in their life- fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.
Why HTMA?
HTMA is a simple, non-invasive test that analyzes a small sample of hair to determine the mineral content of the body. While it might sound basic, what it reveals is anything but.
Because minerals are the spark plugs of life—involved in every cellular function in the body—this test allows us to assess your body’s internal environment in a way that blood work alone can’t.
Here’s what HTMA can tell us:
🔥 Metabolic Type
Are you a fast or slow metabolizer? This affects how you use energy, how you respond to stress, and even how you digest food. Knowing your metabolic type helps us fine-tune your nutrition, supplementation, and lifestyle support.
⚡️ Adrenal Function
Minerals like sodium and potassium give us clues into how your adrenal glands are handling stress. This is especially important in seasons of life where burnout, anxiety, fatigue, or insomnia show up—like pregnancy or postpartum.
🦋 Thyroid Function
While not a direct thyroid test, HTMA gives us indirect markers for thyroid activity—through the ratio of calcium to potassium, and other mineral patterns. It’s an incredibly helpful piece of the puzzle, especially when conventional labs come back “normal” but you still don’t feel like yourself. Cue the brain fog, weight gain, hair loss/hair thinning, fatigue, low libido and more.
☣️ Heavy Metal Accumulation
We’re exposed to environmental toxins all the time, and some of us are more efficient at detoxifying than others. HTMA reveals levels of metals like mercury, aluminum, lead, and arsenic—so we can support gentle, effective detox pathways without guesswork. When accumulated in tissues, heavy metals can not only increase inflammation body wide but they can also displace minerals in the body leading to more depletion.
💧 Mineral Imbalances & Depletions
HTMA identifies key deficiencies and imbalances in calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and more—so we can bring the body back into balance with bioavailable, targeted nourishment.
Why I Love Using HTMA in My Practice
It’s personalized. It’s affordable. It provides insights that blood work often misses. And most importantly—it helps us get to the root of symptoms instead of chasing them around.
For my clients, this often means:
better sleep
steadier moods
improved digestion
balanced metabolism
more stable blood sugar
fewer energy crashes
better postpartum recovery
and even easier cycles
